Lesson 34 · bologna-specific
The University Quarter
La zona universitaria
Via Zamboni and Piazza Verdi are the beating heart of student Bologna, and as a student of the oldest university on earth, this is your home ground and your richest subject from the inside.
The life of the quarter
Founded in 1088, the Università di Bologna gave the world the very model of the university. Its modern life spills along Via Zamboni: students reading on portico steps, bikes leaning everywhere, walls thick with political posters and graffiti, impromptu debates, buskers, the crowd at Piazza Verdi by the Teatro Comunale. It is loud, political, intellectual, and young, the exact texture of the city you are joining.
How to photograph it
From the inside. You are not a tourist here; you are one of them. That gives you access and ease. Photograph the life you are part of: the late-night study, the debate, the demonstration, the coffee between lectures.
Posters and context. The layers of posters, manifestos, and graffiti are a visual record of student politics and culture. Use them as backgrounds that give your human subjects context and meaning.
Gesture and energy. Students are expressive: reading, arguing, laughing, gesturing. Catch the peak of gesture under the porticoes.
Piazza Verdi. The square by the theater concentrates the energy, especially in the evening. By day it is debate and music; late at night it gets rowdier and grimmer, so shoot it with awareness after dark.
A project from within
This quarter rewards the project approach. Over a year, as you live and study here, you can build a deep, insider document of student Bologna that no visitor could make. Your daily walk to class is a shooting opportunity.
Put it into practice
Photograph your own student day: the walk to a lecture, the steps where people read, the posters, the evening in Piazza Verdi. Make the quarter you live in into a body of work.
