Lesson 37 · bologna-specific
Galleries, MAST, and Foto/Industria 2027
Gallerie, MAST e Foto/Industria 2027
You will become a better photographer faster by looking at great photography in person, at scale, in print, than by any amount of scrolling. Bologna gives you world-class places to do exactly that, and you should make seeing work a regular habit, not an occasional treat.
Fondazione MAST: your pilgrimage
The Fondazione MAST is one of the best photography institutions in Italy, and it is free. It mounts world-class exhibitions, often around the theme of industry, work, and technology, in a beautiful contemporary building. Make it a regular pilgrimage. Standing in front of a master print at full scale teaches you about tone, presence, and sequencing in ways a screen never can. Go often, look slowly, and take notes on what makes the work work.
Foto/Industria 2027
MAST runs Foto/Industria, the biennial of photography dedicated to industry and work, which returns in 2027. This is your inspiration and, if you take the 12-month plan seriously, your deadline: a citywide festival of photography happening in your new home during your first year. Let it pull your own project forward, and let it show you what a finished, exhibited body of work looks like.
The wider scene
Beyond MAST, Bologna and its region are rich in places to see work: the Pinacoteca Nazionale and MAMbo for painting and modern art, Palazzo Fava and Palazzo Pallavicini for major shows, the historic Galleria de' Foscherari and Galleria d'Arte Maggiore for contemporary work, and the Cineteca for the moving image. Bologna's ArteFiera in winter is one of Italy's important art fairs. The habit to build: see something, regularly.
How to look
Looking at work is a skill. Do not just glance; study. Ask of each strong image: why does this hold me? How is it composed, lit, toned? How are the images sequenced on the wall, and what does the order do? Take a small notebook (or use this app's journal) and write what you learn. Bring those lessons back to your own shooting.
Put it into practice
Plan your first MAST visit and write, in your journal, three things you want to learn from seeing work in print. Make gallery-going a monthly habit.
